Our Coaches
Mike Miles
Mike Miles served as head coach of the University of Dayton Crew since its inception in 1991, and
continued in that same capacity as it moved to the varsity level in 1996. He retired from the UD
in 2003, after leading the NCAA Division 1 crew to be one of the top non-scholarship programs in the country.
Miles was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2002 after guiding the Flyers varsity eight to a 2nd
place finish at the A-10 Championships, defeating seven scholarship programs and finishing seconds
behind the nationally-ranked UMass Minutemen. That year the Flyers 8 also finished in the finals
of the Avaya Collegiate National Championships. In both 1996 and 2000, Miles coached UD’s Lightweight
4 to a gold medal at the A-10 Championships. He also was instrumental in establishing the Atlantic
10 Rowing Championship.
In 1996, he co-founded the Dayton Youth Rowing Program, a program sponsored by Dayton 5 Rivers
MetroParks for high school students. He also coached at the US Rowing Junior National Team Development
Camp in 1998.
One of Miles’ products was two-time All-American Bernadette Marten, who graduated from UD in 2000.
That year, she was named Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year and was a Collegiate Rowing Coaches
Association All-American. Marten was a member of the U.S. National women’s eight boat who won a
gold medal at the 2002 FISA World Rowing Championship.
In addition to coaching UD, Miles has coached his wife Trish, an accomplished
rower who won the 1999 U.S. National Club Championships in the lightweight singles and the prestigious
Head of the Charles in Boston.
Mike, a 1984 graduate of Cornell University and two-time letterman in rowing, is a Senior Associate
with Booz Allen Hamilton Inc, and supports engineering analysis at Wright-Patterson AFB.

Trish Miles
Trish Miles is the head coach for the Dayton Boat Club master's women's program, and is also helping provide
direction and coaching to the Junior women's team. Along with her husband Mike, Trish was one of the initial
coaches and directors of the University of Dayton Crew in 1991, the program the brought the sport of rowing
to the city of Dayton. Last year her master's women's eight took home the gold at the USRowing Midwest
Regional Championships.
Trish began her rowing career at the College of St Benedict (Minnesota) in 1984, and continued to row with
clubs in Minneapolis and Cincinnati. In 1996, Trish began to train seriously, and that training has paid
off in elite athlete status for the mother of four. She has won the national championships in the lightweight
single, medaled many times at the US Nationals in the lightweight single, open single, and in the double.
In 2000 Trish won the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston, edging out a 1999 world champion and also
a silver medalist just returning from the Olympics the prior month. She regularly finishes in the finals
of the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.
In 2003 Trish travelled to Boston (with fellow Dayton Boat Club rower Cindy Carlson) as a member of the US
Indoor Rowing Team. Competing at the World Indoor Rowing Championships (also known as CRASH-B), Trish
finished third and received a coveted 'hammer' bronze medal behind competitors from Britain and Germany.
Trish and Mike have four children, Madeline (13), Patrick (10), Matthew (9) and Bridget (6).

Leah Coghlan
Leah, former UD novice women’s coach and varsity women’s assistant, brings a wealth of experience
to the Dayton Boat Club juniors. Leah rowed for Dublin High School in Columbus before arriving at
UD, where she rowed in the varsity eight at the first Atlantic 10 Rowing Championships. Leah began
coaching the UD novice women in 1996, has coached the Dayton Junior rowers, and has seen great success.
Her novice crews have finished as high as third at the A-10 Championships, and rowers such as Bernadette
Marten received their initiation to the sport under Leah’s direction.
Leah, formerly a teacher at Incarnation School, is married to Sean Coghlan and has two daughters -
Lara (2), and Finley (6 mos). The rowing connection is strong in Leah’s family: her sister, Karen,
is head women’s coach at Marietta College.
